In 2018 alone, 24% of lone-parent families in Calgary were living under the poverty line, with 60% of female lone-parent families with children under five living in poverty. 26% of households in Ogden spend more than 30% of their income on shelter and 300-400 people per month enter Calgary’s shelter system who had never done so before. Rising inflation and increasing poverty have led to family resources leaving the Ogden community.

Hub:29 is the realization of a vision to build resilient families and communities. It is a collaborative effort to sustain the spirit of the community by investing in the future of families. When we help families thrive, the whole community thrives. The impact of Hub:29 will be felt for generations.

An innovative and visionary solution to addressing homelessness, Hub:29 will enrich the fabric of the community by providing far more than a safe place for families to call home. The building will include:

• Three floors of residential units for families to call home, while feeling safe and supported.
• A main level with multi-purpose, collaborative spaces to gather, learn and serve the community in a holistic way.
• Wrap-around supports such as counselling services, employment coaching, and advocacy to help families create a better future for themselves.
• A pre-school and daycare facility on-site to meet the needs of residents and community members.
• A community kitchen for residents to connect around meals and learn valuable life and social skills.
• A worship space to meet the spiritual needs of the community.
• A community café that invites community integration and provides social enterprise income.

Families need more than just the basics to build a better life for themselves.

To ensure long-term success, Hub:29 will also give families access to 24-7 wrap-around supports. That means individualized care that encourages dignity, safe and stable community living, and positive progression towards wellness goals. Wrap-around support is an investment in the well-being of an entire family, helping them become more resilient and sustainable, so they no longer need to be dependent on emergency assistance.
